Distillery Information

Mount Gay Rum Distilleries is a rum producer on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Its flagship expression is Eclipse, known for its distinctive banana and tropical fruit character, mixed with vanilla and spice. The rum is named after the total solar eclipse of 1910 – also a year of Halley’s comet. The oldest record for the company dates back to 1703, making it the oldest existing rum brand in the world. The business was purchased in 1747 by the unsuitably-named John Sober, who enlisted his friend Sir John Gay Alleyne, a future Speaker of the Barbados House of Assembly, to manage the business. Alleyne refined the distillation process and began creating the superior products which made the company’s name. On his his death in 1801 the business was renamed in his honor, using his middle name as there was already a Mount Alleyne elsewhere on the island.
