Phil’s Shadow is aged for 18 months. It’s then aged in separate “maple syrup” barrels for another 16 months before bottling. Maple syrup and whiskey go together particularly well, and especially in the colder months, when syrup lends a heartier sweetness to cocktails and finished spirits. It’s also a great way to balance out those small-cask whiskeys. And it helps to start with a great base spirit. Wigle has been at the forefront of the conversation on terroir in craft whiskey for some time now.

Phil’s Shadow Maple-Finished Rye Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Aromas of melted butter and maple syrup with subsequent sniffs offering fresh baked oatmeal biscuit, brown sugar and hints of vanilla.

Palate: Semi sweet, gently warming profile featuring maple syrup, whipped butter, pancake and ginger biscuit.

Finish: Fairly fleeting on the finish.

Distillery Information

Wigle is family owned and operated. The distillery became operational in December of 2011 and opened to the public in March 2012 after two years of lobbying to change the state laws to allow for an on-premise model of craft distillery to exist in Pennsylvania. Wigle has been the most awarded craft whiskey distillery for four consecutive years by the American Craft Spirits Association and has won Best in Category Craft Rye Whiskey (2015), Best in Category Wheat Whiskey (2016), Best in Category and Class Gin (2016 & 2018), and Innovation Award for Eau de Pickle (2019).
