Producer Information
Paul Masson is an American brand of wine and brandy. The range of California Carafe wines, popular in the 1970s and closely associated with the “relaxed” performances of Orson Welles in the television commercials, are still available, principally in the US. Burgundian Paul Masson (1859-1940) was a pioneer of Californian viticulture. He worked there initially in 1878 for a couple of years, then returned to the USA for good when the French wine industry was destroyed by phylloxera. The first Paul Masson release was a “Champagne” in 1892, and Masson eventually earned the title “the Champagne King of California”. For a large part of the 20th century the brand was owned by Seagram. In 1987 it was sold to Vintners International, who were taken over six years later by Centera Wine Company (later Constellation Brands). The famous Mountain Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains, built by Masson in 1905, was sold by Constellation in 2008. Today, Paul Masson is best known for its brandy, made in a traditional oak-aged European style. The core products are standard VS Grande Amber, and the VSOP, which is aged for four years. In addition, a number of brandies with fruit flavoring are also produced.
