This latest release from Sweden’s Mackmyra distillery is a bit unusual. It was aged in a mixture of American and Swedish oak. Not so strange there. But then some of it was finished in casks that previously held Swedish cloudberry wine. For those who don’t know, a cloudberry is a fruit that grows in northern climes and is known in England as a knotberry or knoutberry. They grow wild in Sweden and are highly prized for making wine out of, and the used casks for aging whisky in. Makes a nice change from sherry.

Nose: Spicy and smoky with a complex palette of vanilla, fruits and berries. A combination of cloudberries, spicy Swedish oak, juniper smoke and peat.

Palate: Fruity and spicy with juniper, caramel fudge, cloudberries and dried fruits.

Finish: Spicy and slightly smoky with an elegant fruitiness and notes of liquorice.

Distillery Information

Mackmyra has come a long way since 1999 when it was founded as the only whisky distillery in Sweden. Since then it has earned a reputation as a top quality single malt producer in spite of its untraditional Scandinavian location. Alongside various special releases, the First Edition was launched in 2008 with Brukswhisky following in 2010. Two styles of whisky are produced by Mackmyra, a ‘peaty’ malt created using bog moss and juniper wood as well as a fruitier, unpeated style. In 2012 a second site was opened at Gävle, a gravity-run facility that stands at 37 metres high! Between the two sites Mackmyra Svensk Whisky have a capacity to rival many a Scottish distillery with the difference being that almost all of Mackmyra’s output is going into single malts!
