Some of the top-of-the-table whiskies I had tasted in past years were from the prolific vintages of 92 and 93 by The Glendronach either in Sherry Butt or Olorosso Sherry Butt, just like this one. Fond memory on the sibling Cask #42 released later in year 2016, that has rightfully earned a special rank in my book.
Glendronach 1993 Bottled 2016 Taiwan Exclusive 23 Year Old Tasting Notes
Nose: Explosive sherry-ness you’d expect from top of the line GlenDronach. Rich and powerful, with all sorts of dried fruits you can imagine – figs, prunes, dates, raisins and the list goes on. There is a mustiness hiding behind the sherry wall, as if you’re in an old warehouse full of whisky casks. Brown sugar sweetness, pickled ginger, and a luscious leather and dark chocolate. A great representation of modern oloroso sherry cask matured malt.
Palate: Fulfill exactly what the nose promise – rich and full of flavors. The fresh sweetness is really intriguing, and the pickled ginger is creating a nice combo on the palate. A certain Chinese traditional bitter herbal soup I was forced to drink when I was a small kid.
Finish: Very long and warming finish, and perfectly dry with typical oloroso sherry notes, black coffee. some nuttiness, without too much unpleasant bitterness.
Distillery Information
Glendronach Distillery was founded in 1826 by James Allardice. Nestled in the Valley of Forgue, deep in the East Highland Hills, is The GlenDronach Distillery, one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. We have been dedicated to creating the finest, richly-sherried Single Malts for almost 200 years. Over the nearly 200 years of their history, this traditional distillery has been bought, sold, and traded a lot of times. But in 2008 they were finally rescued by the BenRiach Distillery Company.
