Distillery Information

(kowel-EEL-ah) In Gaelic Caol Ila means “Sound of Islay”. Hector Henderson founded the distillery in 1846 near Port Askaig in a remote cove on Islay. The water that the distillery uses is from Loch nam Ban (Torrabolls Loch). Caol Ila is the “workhorse of Islay”.  It is by far the largest distillery on the island and the vast majority of its output is used in blending, particularly in Johnnie Walker and Bell’s.  However Diageo now promotes Caol Ila as a standalone single malt with Special Release bottlings (including unpeated versions).  There is also a wide range of bottles available from independent bottlers.
