Producer Information

Quinta de Soalheiro – often referenced simply as Soalheiro – is a wine estate based in the village of Lugar da Charneca, in the Vinho Verde region of northern Portugal, on the border with Spain. The estate produces a range of wines and labels from the region. While grape vine cultivation by alongside smallholder agriculture has centuries of history in this part of the Iberian peninsula, the germ of the Soalheiro estate dates back to the mid-1970s when João António Cerdeira and his parents planted a (rare) single vineyard of Alvarinho in the Melgaço region. Soalheiro means “sunny” and references the sunny aspect of the original plot. This vineyard is still part of the wider estate and goes into the Primeiras Vinhas Alvarinho label. The company and the founders’ descendants have gone on to expand the wine business considerably, although Alvarinho remains Soalheiro’s flagship variety, as it in Rias Baixas just to the north, in Spain. Other labels include a range sparkling wines from local varieties made in a range of hues; the Allo – a white blend of Loureiro and Alvarinho; a standard Soalheiro Alvarinho; and a number of reserve, single-vineyard and blended wines.
