Red Wine: 2020 | Tarapaca | Etiqueta Azul Gran Reserva
This is oaky in style, yet the barrel-driven notes add to the wine complexity. It opens with sweet vanilla and licorice over a core of cherry and blackberry.

This is oaky in style, yet the barrel-driven notes add to the wine complexity. It opens with sweet vanilla and licorice over a core of cherry and blackberry. A smooth and broad palate exhibits balancing acidity. Flavors of herbs and green bell pepper are followed by black fruit.
Reviews:
- Wine Spectator: An elegant yet well-structured red, with a wonderful layer of chrysanthemum on display from start to finish, plus vibrant blackberry and plum flavors joined by subtle herb and spice details. Shows nice length around firm, chalky tannins.
- James Suckling: Creamy cassis, dark olives and tomato leaf with hints of cedar and incense. A flattering, full-bodied red with creamy oak and fine-grained tannins on the palate, before a long finish with some vanilla and sweet spices.
Producer Information
Viña Tarapacá is a long established producer in the Maipo region of Chile. It is particularly known for its red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon. Carménère, Merlot, Malbec and Syrah also feature in the portfolio. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the principal white grape varieties. The large portfolio is headed by the Gran Reserva and Reserva ranges. Below this are a selection under the Varietal banner. A late harvest sweet wine is made from Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and a little Moscato. The winery is located in Isla de Maipo which has a long tradition as one of Chile’s best wine zones. There are 611 hectares (1510 acres) of vineyards planted within landholdings covering some 2600ha (6400 acres). The primary property, the El Rosario estate, was acquired in 1992. It is surrounded by mountains and the Maipo river, forming what the company calls “Maipo Valley’s Natural Clos” The estate was founded in 1874 under the name Viña de Rojas. It gained its first international medal at the 1876 Exhibition in Philadelphia. The current name dates from the early 20th Century. Doña Mercedes Ulloa gained the property as part of the divorce settlement from her husband who had purchased it in 1892. Her lawyer – and future Chilean President – was Don Arturo Alessandri, “The Lion of Tarapacá”. In 1992 the company became part of the holding company of La Compañia Chilena de Fósforos. This coincided with the purchase of El Rosario and led to a concerted export push. The estate is now part of VSPT Wine Group.
