Producer Information
Starborough Winery is a New Zealand wine estate comprising 160 hectares (395 acres) of Marlborough vineyards. It makes several wines in the region from Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, with a clear focus on the latter. The estate is made up of three vineyards – the O’Dwyer’s Farm vineyard, the Long Lane vineyard, and the Starborough Terrace vineyard. O’Dwyer’s farm vineyard, in the Wairau Valley, produces grapes with fruitier characteristics due to the fertile, free draining alluvial soil. This vineyard is planted with a mixture of Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties. The Long Lane and Starborough Terrace vineyards are in the cooler Awatere Valley on stony, gravel-based soils, making more intense, minerally wines. The estate is owned and operated by the Jones family who have been farming in Marlborough since 1865, with the estate taking its name from the original Starborough sheep station homestead. Despite having diversified into winemaking, the Jones family still stay true to their roots, with Andrew Jones managing the arable farming operation.
