Description

Red Wine: 2020 | Domaine d’Eugenie | Echezeaux

Very dense purple, dark strawberry notes on the nose, clearly ripe even at only just over 13%. A sweet, sensual mouthful, yet with strictness and structure at the back, it offers both delicacy and harmony.

Reviews:

  • Decanter: This marvellous wine shows very approachable, juicy cassis and spice-scented fruit on the initial attack – a ‘vin de plaisir’ – but with time the tannin and the extract reveal themselves, and one sees that it is not lacking in complexity nor depth. The texture on final analysis demonstrates grippy structure and impressive length. The half-hectare of old vines (60-80 years of age) for the Domaine d’Eugénie Echézeaux are located in the Combe d’Orveau. 70% of the small, ripe bunches were vinified as whole clusters and the wine was aged in cask (80% new).
  • Vinous: The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru includes 70% whole bunch and matured in 80% new oak. This is very refined on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, crushed stone, wilted rose petal and a touch of spice. The palate is tensile on the entry with a slightly granular texture, fine depth, real precision and poise on the finish. This really is a top-notch Echézeaux.

Producer Information

Domaine d’Eugénie is a wine producer in Burgundy’s Vosne-Romanée known for its Pinot Noir. It was formed in 2006 from the esteemed vineyards of Domaine René Engel after the death of its proprietor, Philippe Engel, which included premier and grand cru plots. Francois Pinault, owner of Château Latour, bought the vineyards but not the winery. Following Engel’s death in May 2005, the 2005 vintage of Domaine René Engel was sold in bulk. After the acquisition of the vineyards, Domaine D’Eugénie operated in an interim space at Domaine Lupé-Cholet in Nuits-Saint-Georges for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages. In the interim, D’Eugénie established its own winery back in Vosne-Romanée, at the former Clos Frantin vineyard and buildings. These formerly belonged to Beaune-based wine estate Albert Bichot. Bichot retained the Clos Frantin brand. D’Eugénie upgraded all the facilities and renamed the monopole vineyard to Clos d’Eugénie. The domain farms 6.5 hectares (16 acres) in Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Flagey-Échezeaux. It produces six wines from five appellations: the grand crus Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, the premier cru Aux Brûlées and Vosne-Romanée Villages. In 2009, several parcels of vineyards began the conversion to biodynamic farming practices.
