Producer Information
Bodegas San Román is a well-regarded wine producer based in the Toro region of Castilla y León, in northwestern Spain. It is owned by Bodegas Mauro, and was established in 1997 to capture the soil characteristics of the Toro region – loose and stony with clay subsoil that crucially retains water, essential in such a hot and dry region. The estate has 80 hectares (200 acres) of vineyards planted with a significant majority of Tempranillo (called Tinta de Toro here) as is typical of the region. A small amount Grenache makes up the rest of the plantings. San Román produces two wines, both red. The flagship is the Toro San Román, which has a higher production and commands a higher price. It is 100 percent Tempranillo and sees 24 months in both American and French oak of various ages. The second is the Toro Prima, which includes roughly 10 percent Grenache and sees 14 months and French and American oak also of various ages.
