- James Suckling: there’s a firm structure that combines warm and cool elements in the unique way that only Etna reds can achieve. Impressive depth and energy at the very finish. From organically grown grapes. Built for long aging.
Producer Information
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is a Sicilian wine estate that cultivates vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna. It is known for its high average vine age, including pre-phylloxera vines from which it makes exclusively DOC Etna wines. The flagship of the wine portfolio is the Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino. First released in 2006, it is a Nerello Mascalese-dominat blend with small portions of Nerello Capuccio. Prior to release, it is barrel-aged in French barriques for 16 to 18 months and is named after the winemaker who tended the vineyard for more than seven decades. Tenuta delle Terre Nere also porduces a range of Etna Bianco wines predominantly from Carricante, Catarratto, Inzolia and Grecanico. On top of this, the portfolio includes a range of single-vineyard wines that are produced from the highest-quality grapes of individual plots of the estate. Terre Nere’s vineyards encompass 55 hectares (135 acres) in four different subregions across the island. Altitude here ranges from 1960 to 3280 feet (600 to1000m) above sea level, creating steep slopes within an undulating landscape. The steepest gradients are closely terraced and require manual farming practices. Many vines are approaching 100 years old with a handful of plots over 130 years having been planted prior to the phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th Century.
