Producer Information
Miani is a wine producer of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia subregion in northeast Italy. The estate is situated in the village of Buttrio in the hills of Colli Orientali del Friuli, close to Italy’s border with Slovenia. It was founded by Enzo Pontoni in 1985 and is particularly known for its scarce, yet high-quality yields from which it produces fewer than 700 cases of wine per annum. The 10 hectare (25 acre) vineyards are densely planted with a high proportion of Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot vines, as well as smaller parcels including Refosco, Friulano, Malvasia, Chardonnay and Ribolla. The mineral-rich soils found in the vineyards consist of ponca, as it is known in the local dialect of Friuli, and is made up of layers of calcareous clay and sandstone. Miani is particularly for its white wines, specifically those made from Sauvignon Blanc. The vinification process for these wines starts with fermentation in 40 percent new French oak barrels, with no need for temperature control or malolactic fermentation, apart from in the case of Chardonnay. The flagship red wine is Calvari, a varietal Refosco wine aged in new oak barrels. Miani also produces two single-vineyard Merlot wines, Buri and Filip, and a third Merlot made from a blend of the two. Finally, Rosso Miani is a blend of Merlot with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tazzelenghe.
