Reviews:
- Vinous: The 2019 Barolo is a very serious wine. Readers looking for an easygoing, entry-level Barolo will not find that here. Bright and sizzling with tannin, the 2019 is going to need at least a few years to fully come together. Crushed rocks, red/purplish fruit and dried flowers emerge with some coaxing, but this is really a wine for the cellar.
Producer Information
Massolino (formally Azienda Agricola Vigna Rionda) is a Piedmont winery best known for its Barolo DOCG wines made from the Nebbiolo variety. The 23 hectares (57 acres) of estate vines are almost all entirely in the Barolo sub-region Serralunga d’Alba. Nebbiolo is, unsurprisingly, the most important grape variety. Five Barolo wines are made, as well as a Langhe Nebbiolo. However the portfolio is extensive by Piedmontese standards; other red wines are Barbera d’Asti, Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba,. Three white wines are made; a Chardonnay and Riesling under the Langhe DOC, and a Moscato d’Asti. The winery was founded in 1896 by Giovanno Massolino and remains family-owned and -operated. His son and daughter built the first cellar in the 1930s and were involved in foundation of the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbarest Alba Langhe e Dogliano. This organization promotes the regional viticultural areas and was especially important before national ratification of the formal appellations. The wines were first made in a cellar below the family house in the centre of Serralunga d’Alba. In the 1930s the winery moved to the other side of the road, and has since been expanded underground, as the family did not want to leave the historic centre.
