Description
Red Wine: 2019 | Ghislaine Barthod | Chambolle Musigny les Cras
The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is similarly compelling, soaring from the glass with aromas of red berries, exotic spices, orange rind, musk and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound, with a deep and vibrant core of fruit that’s framed by fine, powdery tannins, it concludes with a long, penetrating and intensely mineral finish. This is a magical Chambolle-Musigny worth a special effort to seek out.

Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: A touch more austere than the magical Veroilles, Barthod’s 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras nonetheless gives it stiff competition. Mingling notes of cherries and raspberries with hints of warm spices, orange rind, wild plums and peony, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with huge texture and concentration. Beautifully integrated but tightly wound and youthfully chalky, it will—as usual—demand a little patience.
- VInous: The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Crashas another compelling bouquet of intense red berry fruit laced with sous-bois, crushed rock and pressed rose petal aromas. The medium-bodied palate displays grainy tannins. One of the most structured Chambolles from the domaine and perhaps the most saline on the finish, it gets the saliva flowing and also conveys wonderful freshness. This has real gravitas.
Producer Information
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod is one of the most prominent producers in the Chambolle-Musigny appellation of Burgundy, known for its intense, ageworthy wines from the Pinot Noir grape variety. The estate was initially founded by Marcel Noëllat in the early 20th Century. Marcel’s daughter married Gaston Barthod, an officer in the French army, then stationed in Dijon. The pair continued to work on and develop the domaine over the decades. Barthod’s daughter Ghislaine took over after Gaston’s death in 1999, having effectively run the estate for the previous decade or so. She and partner Louis Boillot combine vineyard work across both their respective domaines, although the two estates are run as separate entities and the wines made in their respective wineries. The Barthod estate is made up of around six hectares (15 acres) of vineyard. Over half of this is split between eight well-sited plots in Chambolle-Musigny’s premier cru vineyards, with the remaining land in Villages-level and AOC Bourgogne parcels. Holdings in Chambolle-Musigny premier cru sites include 0.8 hectares (two acres) in Les Cras, 0.7 hectares (1.7 acres) in Aux Beaux Bruns, 0.4 (one acre) hectares in Les Veroilles and around a quarter of a hectare (0.6 acres) in both Les Fuées and Les Baudes.
