Producer Information
Castello di Montepò is a Tuscan wine estate in the Scansano district of the inland Maremma Toscana region. It was founded in the 1990s by Jacopo Biondi Santi of the famous Montalcino family. The winery is housed in the imposing Montepò castle – a single fortress building dating back to the 12th Century and set on a rocky outcrop surrounded by woods and vines. The Scansano region is well protected by surrounding hills and the mesoclimate is dry with cooling breezes. The wider Montepò estate covers around 600 hectares (1500 acres) although only around 55 hectares (140 acres) are planted to vines. The vineyards are predominantly planted on schist subsoils, but the exposure and altitude of the plots do vary. The Castello di Montepò portfolio is led by a group of Toscana IGT wines. Sassoalloro, named after the boulders that are a feature of the local landcape, is 100 percent Sangiovese Grosso (from Brunello Biondi Santi clones), and in some years a special edition Oro version is released. Montepaone is a straight Cabernet Sauvignon, while Schidione is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. In some years, Montepò also makes a premium varietal Merlot called Morione. Finally, the estate also makes standard and Riserva Morellino di Scansano wines. In contrast to the Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino estate, where large Slavonian oak casks are used for maturing wines, the wines here are aged in French oak barrels.
