Producer Information
Jean-Claude Boisset is a producer based in Nuits-Saint-Georges in the northern part of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or district. The estate comprises 40 hectares (99 acres) of vineyards, spanning premier cru climats from Gevrey-Chambertin to Morey-Saint-Denis, as well as grand cru vineyards including Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche. The family-owned estate was established by Jean-Claude Boisset in 1961 within the walls of the historic Ursulines convent. To begin with, Boisset only bought and sold wines, but in 1964 he purchased his first vineyard plot in Gevrey-Chambertin. The company grew rapidly over the next two decades and in 1985 it became the first of Burgundy’s négociants on the stock market. Today, Nathalie and Jean-Charles Boisset oversee the management of the estate. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dominate in the vineyards, but Boisset also cultivates Gamay, Syrah and Aligoté. After harvest, the grapes are transferred to vats via a gravity flow system and vinification starts with a cold pre-fermentation maceration that lasts 6-7 days. After fermentation, the wines age in French oak, although the proportion of new barrels is kept low, so as to not mask the character of the wine.
