Reviews:

  • Wine Enthusiast: This wine is the result of a joint venture between Bordelais Bruno Prats and the Symington family in the Douro. It has an impressive mix of elegance, density and concentration. It’s a wood-aged wine that’s packed with dark plum, berry and rich tannins, which will lend well to cellaring.
  • James Suckling: Polished nose with aromas of plums, blueberries, cedar, chocolate and praline. It’s full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Delicious depth of fruit. Give this a couple more years.

Producer Information

Prats & Symington of the Douro Valley is a partnership-producer of the Symington family and Bruno Prats (former owner of Bordeaux’s Chateau Cos d’Estournel). It formed in 1999 with the inaugural vintage released the following year to high-acclaim. The Chryseia, meaning “golden” in ancient Greek is the flagship wine of the Prats & Symington portfolio, a Touriga Nacional-dominant blend with Touriga Franca. The exact portions of which depend on the vintage. It spends up to, but usually a bit less than 15 months barrel-aging on 100-percent French oak. The wine is often recognised as a major contributor to the resurgence of non-fortified Douro DOC wines. Post Scriptum was launched in 2002 as a partner wine to Chryseia. Other notable wines include the Quinta de Roriz Reserva and the Quinta de Roriz Vintage Port which are sourced from the major Quinta de Roriz estate. The 42 hectare (103 acres) estate has cultivated vines since 1565. Additional estate include the Quinta da Vila Velha of which lies directly alongside Roriz as well as Quinta de Perdiz in Rio Torta Valley. Symington Family Estate is one of the leading producers of premium port with the company now composed of the 4th and 5th generation of the family. The portfolio consists of four major port houses, Graham’s, Dow’s, Warre’s and Cockburn’s.
