Ovid Napa Valley is a singular, dynamic and continuous experiment in terroir, nestled at an elevation of 1,500 feet on a secluded mountaintop in the western reaches of Pritchard Hill. Rich and enduring, the vintage finds exuberant expression in this OVID Napa Valley. Mulberry, bay leaf and cola notes entwined with aromas of licorice root, sage, sandalwood, cassis and fresh blackberry radiate from the glass. Powerful and complete, this wine’s poise and levity will exhilarate for decades to come.

  • Wine Spectator: Packed nicely with dark plum, cassis and raspberry puree flavors, this is vivid and direct, with a graphite edge harnessing the fruit through the finish. There’s a strong cast iron spine running from start to finish, giving this some serious depth for the cellar. A late echo of sweet bay leaf adds the finishing touch. Patience required. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Best from 2022 through 2038.
  • Vinous: The 2018 Ovid is pretty tightly wound today. In fact, it seems to have closed quite a bit since I last tasted it about a year ago. That won’t be an issue in time, but it is something readers should keep in mind. There’s terrific depth and resonance, all the 2018 needs is cellaring.

Producer Information

OVID is an organically farmed, 15-acre vineyard perched on a secluded mountaintop at 1,400 ft. elevation in the western reaches of the Pritchard Hill geography of Napa Valley. Here, they farm rocky red, volcanic soils to capture a true sense of place and craft long lived wines composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. They ferment only with native yeasts and bottle their wines without fining or filtering.
The Winemaker since 2006, Austin Peterson, combines his site-specific experience with a sense of experimentation, embracing a tension between classical and cutting-edge winemaking methods.
