The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a magical wine in the making, and readers might think of it as a more elegant, structurally refined version of Trapet’s 1999 Latricières. Wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, cassis, dark chocolate, coniferous forest floor and rose petals, it’s full-bodied, velvety and layered, with an incisive spine of acidity, lively acids and terrific concentration, concluding with a long, resonant finish.

Reviews:

  • Allen Meadows: This too presents a deft touch of wood on the slightly cooler and even more floral-infused aromas of wild dark berries, anise, tea and forest floor. There is slightly better energy and certainly much more minerality on the dusty, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish.
  • Vinous: The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, matured in 40–50% new oak, offers pretty dark cherry, wild strawberry and undergrowth scents on the nose; a light marine scent emerges with time in the glass, along with a touch of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, well-judged acidity and good density, and it maintains a sense of control all the way through. Quite linear on the finish but displays lovely sapidity on the aftertaste.

Producer Information

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet is wine producer based in Gevrey-Chambertin, 13km (eight miles) south of Dijon, in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits subregion. The wider Rossignol-Trapet estate includes vineyards located in both the Côte de Nuits and the more southerly Côte de Beaune, and produces a range of wines covering grand and premier cru sites, predominantly in the Gevrey and Beaune appellations. The domaine was founded in 1961 by the marriage of Jacques Rossignol and Mado Trapet. Both the Rossignol and Trapet families have long and notable histories in the regions of Volnay and Gevrey-Chambertin, respectively. Their sons Nicolas and David Rossignol took over the management of the estate in 1990, and subsequently introduced biodynamic agricultural practices to the Domaine. The estate is a Pinot Noir producer, working with the variety across a range of sites and at vine densities that range from low to high. They are generally located on southeast facing hillsides, typified by mineral-rich soils composed of clay and a variety of minerals, but mainly based around limestone. The estate is certified biodynamic by Demeter and organic by Ecocert, and favors the use of of natural herbicides, as well as natural and organic fertilizers, in its vineyards. Domaine Rossignol-Trapet holds vineyards in the Côte de Nuits Grand Cru climats of Le Chambertin, Latricieres-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin, as well as five Côte de Nuits Premier Cru-classified vineyards in Clos Prieur, Petite Chapelle, Cherbaudes, Les Corbeaux and Aux Combottes. The Domaine’s sole Beaune Premier Cru-classified vineyard is Les Teurons (one of the largest in Beaune) but also has vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune.
