Opaque red-black. Scarlet rim. The wine opens to an amalgam of minerals and unctuous super-ripe berries. On the palate the wine is deep, rich and ripe. Black fruits (cherries, plums) give way to hints of liquorice, molasses, and a hint of cinnamon. Solid tannins and focused acidity with a long finish.
Reviews:
- Wilfred Wong: The 2018 Alto Moncayo Campo de Borja Moncayo is distinctive and generous on the palate. TASTING NOTES: This wine excels with aromas and flavors of red fruit and oaky notes. Enjoy it with grilled lamb chops.
- Wine Spectator: Plush in texture and mouthwatering, this expressive red offers a pure beam of cassis and black plum fruit as well as a pretty display of licorice, medicinal herbs, mocha and spice. Full-bodied and well-knit, with sleek tannins and the tang of orange peel acidity defining the racy finish. Drink now through 2030.
Producer Information
Bodega Alto Moncayo is a Spanish winery in Campo de Borja, known for exclusively making wines from the Garnacha wine grape variety. It was founded in 2002 as a partnership between Andalucia producer Jorge Ordóñez, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, and Bodegas Borsao, one of the largest and most influential producers in the Campo de Borja appellation. The Alto Moncayo vineyards cover 92 hectares (227 acres) around the town of Borja in the heart of the DO. These vineyards are located in the foothills of the Moncayo Massif: namely Ainzón, Fuendejalón and Tabuenca. The vines sit at altitudes that range between 1600-2600ft (490-790m) above sea level. The soil has a high stone content and is made up of limestone, marl and slate, a composition that makes for excellent drainage and encourages deep root sets toward a layer of water-retaining clay. Alto Moncayo produces a trio wines, all sourced from old-vine Garnacha which produce low yields of grapes with concentrated flavor compounds. The oldest vines are as much as 100 years old and are used in the Aquilon cuvée, with slightly younger average ages in the vines harvested for the Alto Moncayo and the Veraton expressions.
