Reviews:

  • Vinous: The 2017 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru, which was racked in August, contains 15% new oak, has a very pure bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petals, just a light touch of vanilla pod emerging with aeration. The palate is very mineral-driven thanks to the gravel-strewn soils that seem to govern the personality of this Beaune. A dash of black pepper enlivens the grippy finish. Very fine.
  • John Gilman: The 2017 Clos des Aigrots is an excellent wine in the making. The bouquet is deep and complex, wafting from the glass in a fine blend of red and black cherries, raw cocoa, chalky soil tones, pigeon, gentle smokiness and a discreet base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full and nicely reserved in personality, with a seamless attack, a sappy core, excellent soil signature and fine length and grip on the ripely tannic and very well-balanced finish. This is high class juice in the making, but it will probably want a full decade in the cellar to properly blossom and start hitting on all cylinders.

Producer Information

Domaine Michel Lafarge is a producer of Burgundy wines located in Volnay, on the Côte de Beaune. The domaine was established in the 18th Century by Michel Lafarge’s great-great-grandparents and remains family-owned. In 1995, Michel Lafarge was among the first in Burgundy to experiment with biodynamic viticulture and is known for his minimal intervention techniques in the vineyard and winery. Today Michel Lafarge’s son, Frédéric produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from 10 hectares (25 acres) of vineyard-owned land in Volnay. Domaine Michel Lafarge is best recognized for its Pinot Noir from Clos des Chênes, a notable Premier Cru vineyard in the village of Volnay. For all wines, around five percent new oak is used in the maturation process and wines are only lightly fined and rarely filtered before bottling. Michel Lafarge passed away in 2020. The estate is no co-managed by Frédéric Lafarge with his wife, Chantal.
