Producer Information
Domaine Lignier-Michelot is a wine producer based in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits subregion, where it produces a range of predominantly red, Pinot Noir-based wines from the Morey appellation itself and from neighboring villages. The domaine counts some highly regarded premier cru and grand cru vineyards among its holdings. The Lignier family has cultivated vines in Morey-Saint-Denis since the early 20th Century, but sold its grapes to négociants each vintage until 1992, when it began to bottle some of its own wines. The domaine has a little more than eight hectares (20 acres) under vine with several plots older than 50 years in its three premier cru sites, and younger vines in three grand cru vineyards: Clos de la Roche, Charmes-Chambertin, and a plot in Clos Saint-Denis so small it only produces a single barrel (production is often supplemented by buying in fruit from this site). Lignier-Michelot also makes village-level wine from neighboring Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. No pesticides or herbicides are used in the vineyard and low yields are maintained through vigilant green pruning. Grapes are completely destemmed and undergo a five-day cold maceration, followed by a naturally occurring fermentation. Aging typically lasts from 12 to 16 months in barrels of varying ages, with the premier and grand cru seeing a third new oak. The exceptions is the Clos de la Roche grand cru, which in some vintages is aged entirely in new barrels.
