It comes from Pinot Noir grapes grown and grown in Gevrey-Chambertin in the 1.5 hectares of vineyards that the Domaine Drouhin-Laroze owns in the Grand Cru Bonnes Mares. The Bonnes Mares Grand Cru AOC 2016 shows a beautiful ruby-garnet color. On the nose we find scents of cassis, spice flowers and light vanilla. On the palate it is ample, robust in its structure and endowed with an outstanding class. In this wine we have an encounter between remarkable elegance and finesse with a well-controlled tannin. The soils are very thin (about 40cm) and very rich in stone. Pinot Noir is vinified by maceration for 25 days with spontaneous fermentation; subsequently the wine was transferred to new pieces at 80% where it was aged for 18 months and then bottled. Only indigenous yeasts are used.

Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: The 2016 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was perhaps the one grand cru that I felt was a little disjointed and did not quite deliver the vivacity of the Chapelle-Chambertin or Latricières. It includes 40% whole bunch fruit and was depleted by 30% because of the frost, but it just came across a little dolorous at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This feels a little foursquare and conservative and just needs more of the flamboyance and blue fruit you associate with this vineyard.

Producer Information

Five generations have been running the Domaine for 163 years, Caroline and Nicolas, Christine and Philippe’s children represent the sixth. In 1850, Jean-Baptiste Laroze started a vineyard operation in Gevrey Chambertin. He was later succeeded by Felix LarozeAROZE. Each successive generation continued to develop the Estate with the sole objective of investing in hillside vineyards, which was a visionary and risky choice. At the time, those vineyards were already very expensive and not very productive. The bet paid off and today, thanks to the sacrifices and risk-taking of the previous generations, the 11.50 hectare Estate is one of the most prestigious in terms of diversity, quality and the surface area of its appellations.
