Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Proprietary Red Wine is blended of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot. It opens with compelling chocolate box and licorice scents over a core of black and red currants, warm plums and baking spices with hints of cedar chest and pencil lead. The palate is full-bodied with layers of cassis and kirsch flavors framed by firm, grainy tannins and fabulous freshness, finishing long and spicy.
- Jeb Dunnuck: Just about as close to perfection as a wine can get, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon from winemaker Chris Carpenter comes mostly from mountain vineyards and is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot. This full-bodied, rounded, thrillingly textured beauty boasts a saturated purple color as well as a huge nose of crème de cassis, new saddle leather, barbecue smoke, and scorched earth. It has perfect integration of its fruit, tannins, acidity, and oak, carries remarkable power and intensity, yet still glides over the palate with no heaviness or sensation of weight. It’s going to be a legendary Napa Valley Cabernet and will have 3 decades or more of longevity.
Producer Information
Cardinale Estate is a premium-wine producer located in the Oakville sub-region of Napa Valley. The estate is most famous for its proprietary red wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot sourced from AVAs around the area, including from Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain. The Cardinale blend is created from two key estate vineyards – Veeder Park vineyard in Mount Veeder and Keyes vineyard in Howell Mountain. The Veeder Park vineyard, on the southwestern edge of the Napa Valley, is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot. Here, a 1800 feet (550 meter) altitude and gravelly loam soils create perfect terroir for viticulture. Depending on the vintage, it contributes approximate 30-percent of the final blend. The Keyes vineyard, in comparison, is located 1700 feet (520 meters) above sea level on the northeastern slopes of the Napa Valley. It covers 28 hectares (68 acres) and is planted on white and red volcanic rocky loam soils. Keyes vineyard is planted to both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that together contribute approximately 40-percent of the grapes used in the Cardinale blend. The remaining grapes are harvested from vineyards in Spring Mountain, Diamond Mountain, St Helena, Oakville and Stags Leap District. A basket-press is used for the soft extraction of tannins after fermentation with native yeasts. French oak is sourced for barrel-aging.
