- Wine Advocate: The 2015 Extra-Brut Partition is showing very well indeed, unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, white flowers, almonds and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with racy acids and a seamless, complete profile, it concludes with a long, saline finish. Disgorged in January 2021 with one gram per liter dosage, it’s a blend of Sélèque’s favorite barrel from each of his parcels every year, to reflect the vintage conditions across the ensemble of his holdings.
Producer Information
Jean-Marc Sélèque has been in the business since 2008 and is now the third generation to run the winery. It is located at the eastern end of the Vallée de la Marne in the commune of Pierry, which is classified as a Premier Cru. Most of the 9 hectares of vineyards are also located in Pierry, which are spread over 45 plots in the 7 municipalities of Pierry, Moussy, Epernay, Dizy, Mardeuil, Boursault and Vertus. The plants are on average 40 years old and planted with 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir. In 2005, a modern and functional cellar was built, which houses steel tanks, oak barrels of various sizes, a concrete egg and a clay amphora for the aging of the base wines. Like many of the young vignerons, Jean-Marc works according to biodynamic ideas. A lot of manual work by the five employees in the vineyard, the use of a horse instead of a tractor and natural substances to fertilize and strengthen the vines ensure the biodiversity of the soil and promote healthy and resistant vines. The statement “the wine is made in the vineyard” sounds a bit trite, but it’s true. Therefore, it is always the aim of the winemaker to produce grapes that reflect the terroir as best as possible and result in authentic wines full of character. The plots and grape varieties are vinified and expanded separately in order to later allow for a large scope in the composition of the different bottlings. Grandfather Henri, father Richard and Jean-Marc share a passion for music. They see parallels to viticulture and musical expressions form a recurring theme in the names and designs of their wines.
