Producer Information
MacDonald Vineyard is an Oakville based producer in the heart of the Napa Valley. The 15 acre (6 hectare) estate is apart of the historical To Kalon vineyard – one of the most famous and valued plots of vineyard in the country. Current proprietors, brothers Alex and Graeme MacDonald, inherited the estate from their great-grandparents who established the vineyard post Prohibition. The inaugural yield was sold to neighbouring Robert Mondavi Winery initiating a contract that remains upheld to this day. Currently, 10 acres of the estate is sold to Mondavi although the future of this contract remains unclear. Planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon, the MacDonald estate has some of the oldest vines in the Napa Valley that were planted in 1954. These gnarly vines produced small yields of grapes with concentrated flavor compounds. Since inheriting the estate, Alex and Graeme have returned the viticulture to more old school practices including dry farming. The inaugural vintage of varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from the MacDonalds brand was released in 2012. Over the past decade, it has been continually met with high-acclaim from critics and consumers alike. Approximately 500 cases are released to mailing list subscribers each vintage.
