Deep and shiny ruby red color with shades of garnet, this wine shows very intense and complex on the nose where hints of this wine’s stay in oak stand out (coffee, spices, leather, toastiness) well integrated with stewed fruit and nuts. The first impressions on the palate are mellow, evolving towards a powerful and structured finish with a long aftertaste. Tannins show sweet, restrained and very well integrated into the wine’s structure.

Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: The classical 2012 Viña Real Gran Reserva is produced with 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano, fermented in stainless steel with neutral dry yeasts and aged in new oak barrel for two years. It’s very spicy and creamy, with developed aromas, open and expressive. The palate feels very polished, with a fine thread of acidity going through its core. There is good balance between power and elegance. It should develop nicely in bottle, even if it’s approachable now. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2015.
  • Falstaff: A bit closed at first, then opens up to plum and dark berry aromas, plus an interesting aroma of venison, together with a bouquet of herbs and bay leaf. Very present on the palate, but elegant without losing volume. Tight tannin structure, can continue to mature for a long time.

Producer Information

Viña Real is a Spanish winery and offshoot brand of the Rioja producer Compañia Vinicola del Norte España (CVNE). It is best known for Tempranillo-dominant red blends, as well as a rosé and barrel-aged white wine from Viura. It emerged in 1920 as a single-vineyard bottling from vines in Elciego, though the exact location of the original parcel of vines has since been forgotten. It has its own winery independent of CVNE, as is the case with CVNE’s two other brands, Imperial and Contino. The Viña Real winery itself consists of three buildings with the main structure built from red cedar in the likeness of a fermenting vat. Viña Real is based in Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa and produces a collection of red wines at Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva levels, the latter being the highest quality and smallest production. The winery also produces a limited-production of Fermentado en Barrica, a Viura wine sourced from 20-year-old vines in Alavesa, Elciago and Laguardia. It is fermented and aged in Hungarian oak barrels of varying capacities and ages.
