Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Booth Bella Oaks Vineyard comes from the same vineyard the late Joe Heitz made famous at his cellars, when it was called Bella Oaks. Staglin’s offering is a sensual, seductive, dark ruby/purple-colored Cabernet offering notes of licorice, incense, black cherries and blackcurrants. Savory and round with no hard edges, it comes across like a high fashion design from Chanel. Full-bodied, elegant and pure, this beauty should drink well for 15 or more years.
- Vinous: Interestingly, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Booth-Bella Oaks Vineyard comes across as a bit restrained for the year, with gorgeous balance of ripeness and freshness. The tannins are firm, but also very nicely integrated throughout. There is a lot to like here, that much is obvious. Dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from David Abreu’s Thorevilos vineyard fill out the blend, a practice the Staglins will continue until their own replanted parcels in Booth-Bella Oaks start bearing high-quality grapes.
Producer Information
Staglin Family Vineyard is a Californian wine producer located in Rutherford, Napa Valley. It is most famous for its premium wines produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sangiovese. The 20-hectare (50-acre) vineyard passed through many different hands before the Staglin family became the proprietors in 1985 – including a Texan gold and oil tycoon on the run from the law in his home state, as well as the more respectable Beaulieu Vineyard. Located at the base of Mount St. John, the estate vineyard lies on an alluvial fan of volcanic soils. These soils, when combined with the area’s unique mesoclimate, provides ideal growing conditions for vines with the first vineyard established as far back as the mid 1860s. The flagship Staglin Family Vineyard range includes Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter commonly blended with small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Other wine ranges in the collection include the Salus range with a Bordeaux Blend amoungst other varietal wines. Salus was named after the Roman goddess of health and wellbeing with profits for the Salus range contributed to the funding of mental health research.
