Baked berry aromas are accompanied by spicy oak and rooty hints. A brawny palate is in good shape but boosted by tartaric acidity. Blackberry, black-cherry and coffee flavors are oak-aided, however this is surprisingly short on the finish, which often happens with ripe red wines like this.
Producer Information
Viña Santa Carolina is a Chilean winery that has been operating continuously since the late 19th Century when the local wine industry was founded. It produces a wide range of wines, encompassing many different styles, grape varieties and price points. The portfolio is sourced from many of Chile’s designated viticultural areas and includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Carignan, Petit Verdot, Carmenère, Syrah as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Santa Carolina was founded in 1875 in Santiago by Luis Pereira Cotapos, and named after his wife, Carolina Iñiguez. In 1877, it began the construction of its cellars, which were built using a mixture of limestone and egg-white in a signature method of the architecture of the city at the time. The cellars were declared a national historic monument in 1973 and remain in use by the company today. Santa Carolina is part of the larger company Carolina Wine Brands, which owns a number of South American wine estates.
