With nice subtlety, and lots of length, the 2012 Pivot Vineyard offers an earthier presentation, darker fruit character. There is a lot of depth here showing notes of lavender and herbs, wild brush vegetation, and the dark-fruit earthiness mentioned all washed through deft structure and mouthwatering acidity.

Reviews:

  • Vinous: The 2012 Pinot Noir The Pivot Estate Vineyard is pliant and expressive, but also has enough structure to age well for a number of years. There is wonderful depth and density to the fruit, yet the flavors are quite primary, which suggests the 2012 needs time in bottle to develop its full range of aromatics. The future looks very bright. Readers lucky enough to own the Estate Pinot should be thrilled.
  • Decanter: The colour here is delicate, as is the ripe but poised raspberry-scented nose. The aromas show a light touch with the oak and considerable purity of fruit. In the mouth it’s concentrated without being overblown, and the rich fruit is cut by good acidity which also gives a tangy aftertaste. The silky texture is not coarsened by ungainly tannins, and the finish is luminous and long.

Producer Information

Littorai is a small, family-owned producer in Sonoma focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The estate makes a range of single-vineyard wines from these two varieties, sourced from a range of contract growers, leased vineyards and estate vines in the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley AVAs. The estate was founded in 1993 by Heidi and Ted Lemon. Combined, they brought experience from numerous stop estates including Romanée-Conti, Dujac and Georges Roumier as well as Domaine Chandon and Stag’s Leap Cellars. The Lemons bought a 12 hectare (30 acre) farm in western Sonoma County in 2003. Only around 2ha (5 acres) of this is planted to vines, with the remainder devoted to pasture with cows and hay for compost, and to undeveloped streams and woods. The estate vines, which make the Pivot Pinot Noir, are farmed without fertilizers according to biodynamic principles. Littorai’s winery building, completed in 2008, is made from insulating reinforced straw bales, with natural ventilation for temperature control. Juice and wine is transported via gravity to prevent excess oxidation and preserve the phenolic compounds.
