Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The nose is very floral with violets and dried rose petals, with just a hint of sea salt in the background. The palate is full-bodied, with a little more backbone and delineation than the El Alto. It shows fine delineation and poise towards the finish.
- Wine Enthusiast: There’s plenty to like in this Tupungato Malbec, but since it was made from young vines, it’s limited in depth, with angularity to the palate. Flavors of spicy plum and berry come with substantial oaky support, while the finish is lively, bouncy and holding onto its acidity.
Producer Information
Doña Paula is a wine producer in Mendoza, Argentina, which is particularly known for its Malbec wines. Established in 1997, Doña Paula are an estate winery, producing wine entirely from company owned vineyards. The wine portfolio is headed by two Malbecs: the Doña Paula Parcel and the Doña Paula Selección both of which are highly-awarded. The large portfolio also includes the Doña Paul Estate, the Paula, and the entry level Los Cardos ranges. Each line features Malbec plus a number of familiar international varieties such as Syrah or Chardonnay. The Sauvage Blanc is a sparkling wine produced from Sauvignon Blanc, the first of its kind in Argentina. Wines are made in a range of cement tanks and fermenters. Unusually for Argentina, cold macerations are used to extract color and tannin from red grapes before alcoholic fermentation whillst micro-oxygenation is employed for the entry-level wines. The company’s first vineyard at Ugarteche was acquired in 1997, after seven years of research into the most suitable sites. The winery was built in 1998 and the first crop was picked a year later. Then, between 2005 and 2007, the winery was extended and two new estates were purchased in Tupungato and San Carlos in the Uco Valley. The company owns 703 hectares (1737 acres) of vineyards with all wines sourced from the company-owned vineyards.
