Producer Information
Clos Erasmus is a popular and critically acclaimed wine producer based in Gatallops in the Priorat region of northeast Spain, producing an eponymous label made from old-vine Garnacha (locally “Garnatxa”) and Syrah. Officially known as Clos i Terrasses (Clos Erasmus is the flagship wine), Glorian established the estate in 1989 with help from now-well established local powerhouses René Barbier of Clos Mogador and Alvaro Palacios. Glorian began making Clos Erasmus at Barbier’s cellars before buying an old cellar from Palacios. Her wines’ renown quickly spread with US importer Eric Solomon being so impressed by the inaugural release, he bought the entire production (then 100 cases). Glorian and Solomon would later marry in the late 1990s. Today, production is between 2000 and 3000 cases, made from three separate vineyard sites: Escales (1.7 hectares/4.2 acres), Socarrats (2.2 hectares/5.4 acres) and the larger Aubagues vineyard. Around 3000 bottles (over 250 cases) of Clos Erasmus and 20,000 bottles (over 1600 cases) of Laurel are produced annually, with volumes varying from vintage to vintage. The vineyards (which are overseen by Ester Nin – another big name in the region) have been run biodynamically since 2004 and winemaking is labor-intensive with 20-day maceration and around 20 months in new and old French oak barriques. Some of the wine is aged in amphorae. A second wine, Laurel, is made from lots not making the final blend for Clos Erasmus. Laurel also contains a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Clos Erasmus is routinely praised by critics and is one of the few Spanish wines to have received 100 points from US wine critic Robert Parker.
