Producer Information
Bodega Catena Zapata is one of the foremost wine estates in Mendoza. Founded in 1902, it is Argentina’s oldest winery still in the hands of the founding family. It is particularly associated with rich, full-bodied red wines produced from Malbec. Dr. Laura Catena leads the winery, representing the fourth generation. She joined the company in 1995 when her father Nicolás Catena Zapata was at the helm, having first qualified as a medical doctor. Dr. Catena also heads the Catena Institiute of Wine, a think tank she founded in the same year. This collaborates with domestic and international universities to advance Argentina’s wine regions. Its research is published in industry and academic journals and shared with the global wine industry. The estate is made up of six vineyards in the Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato and San Carlos sub-regions of Mendoza, at altitudes ranging from 3000 to 4750 feet (920 to 1450 meters) above sea level. Catena Zapata is particularly known for its ungrafted massale vineyards, propagated from the best performing old vines. The winery, with its striking Mayan-influenced pyramid shape, is located in Agrelo, in Luján de Cuyo.
