Reviews:

  • Wine Enthusiast: This vintage of Tenuta di Trinoro’s renowned super Tuscan (mostly Merlot with some Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Canernet Sauvignon) is a tad too ripe and mature to score higher. Bold notes of strawberry and blackberry preserves rob the wine of some of its inherent elegance and add a chewy, sticky element to its mouthfeel. Otherwise, you’ll get bold tones of tobacco, leather and spice.

Producer Information

Tenuta di Trinoro is an Italian wine producer, located on the border of Umbria and Tuscany. It was established in 1992 by Andrea Franchetti from Bordeaux cuttings, and now produces a range of wines focused largely on Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate is located in a natural amphitheatre, where the mesoclimate is warm and well-protected by the surrounding hills. This creates ideal conditions for grapes to ripen to their full potential, and the resultant wine is concentrated in flavor compounds. The soils are made up of blue clay, rock and gravel, which is particularly well-suited to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The flagship wine from the portfolio is the Tenuta di Trinoro, a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Proportions of each variety change depending on the conditions of the vintage, and the wine is only made in small quantities, around 800 cases a year. From the year 2000, Tenuta di Tinoro have been producing a range of wines sourced from Mt Etna on the island of Sicily. The most important variety from this collection is the indigenous grape Nerello Mascalese. The most recent addition to the the Tenuta di Tinoro collection is the Sancaba Pinot Noir, sourced from the province of Siena in Tuscany. Sancaba is an acronym invented by Carlo Franchetti as a tribute to the town of San Casciano dei Bagni.
