Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: 1998 produced a smaller crop (4,300 cases), but was an identical blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wine, like the 1997, was made at the Napa Wine Company, right before the Spottswoode Winery was completed. It exhibited no signs of greenness, despite the fact that it was a cool year with most of the heat coming at the end of the season. Notes of black and red currants, cedar wood, graphite and spice box are all present in this surprisingly strong 1998 that seems to have hit its plateau of full maturity. For that reason, it is probably best consumed over the next 7-8 years to take advantage of the delicious fruit that it has, although there is not the depth of structure and intensity of the great vintages.
  • Decanter: The 1998 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the estate’s most appealing vintages to drink now. A complex aromatic mélange of smoky black fruit, cigar box, loamy soil and a top-note of violet is the prelude to a supple, nicely balanced, sappy palate with melted tannins. Its classical proportions will appeal to tasters with an old world sensibility.

Producer Information

Spottswoode is a historic, Napa Valley wine producer, located in St Helena. The family-owned estate have been producing wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah for multiple generations. The estate itself was established in 1882 by George Schonewald. As well as planting the vineyard, he also constructed the Victorian farmhouse which remains on the estate today. It came under its current ownership in 1972 when the Novak family purchased the estate. The first Cabernet Sauvignon wine released in 1982. Today, there is 42 acres (17 hectares) of vines planted, most of which are Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards have been certified organic since 1992. The flagship wine of the portfolio is the Spottswoode’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged for 20 months in French oak, two thirds of which is new, and depending on the vintage may have a proportion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc is predominantly produced from estate fruit, with a small portion sourced from surrounding vineyards. Spottswood also produce a second Cabernet Sauvignon wine, the Lyndenhurst, and tiny amounts of Syrah that are bottled under the name ‘Field Book’.
