• Wine Advocate: The 1998 Trilogy Proprietary Red Wine reveals the vintage’s shortcomings. It is a very good, even excellent wine, but the vintage’s short, cool growing season has given the wine more austerity than normal. A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Malbec, it offers plenty of spicy new oak, mineral, licorice, and damp, foresty aromas and flavors.

Producer Information

Flora Springs Winery & Vineyards is a producer located in the Rutherford sub-appellation of Napa Valley, California. It was established in 1978 by Jerry and Flora Komes, and makes a wide array of wines sourced from multiple vineyards spanning Napa Valley, notably the Trilogy Cabernet Sauvignon. When the couple first purchased the property, it was an abandoned winery from the 19th Century that had been completely overgrown. They restored the historic building on the property and it now serves as the winery and cellars. Flora Springs is still family-owned and operated by third-generation vintners Nat Komes and Sean Garvey. There are around 260 hectares (650 acres) of estate vineyards which provide grapes for a range of red and white wines. Many of these are blended across AVAs: for example, the signature Trilogy Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Rutherford and Oakville. Other signature wines include a barrel-fermented Chardonnay, a Sauvignon Blanc and, more recently, a Family Select Chardonnay. Some of the wines are only available directly from the winery and its wine club.
