Producer Information

Château Yon-Figeac is a Saint-Émilion property which is ranked as a Grand Cru Classé in the official 2012 classifications. It is best known for its Merlot-based red wine. The property was once part of the much larger Château Figeac property, although it lies just southeast of the modern version, closer to the centre of the Saint-Émilion zone. It is located some three kilometers (two miles) northwest of Saint-Emilion town, neighboring Château Laroze (which lies to the southeast) with châteaux La Marzelle and Figeac itself to the northwest. The Yon-Figeac estate is one of the larger single-plot estates on the Bordeaux “right bank” (the name given to the wine regions north of the Dordogne river, including Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, Montagne-Saint-Emilion and others). Its vineyard covers just under 25 hectares (62 acres) on sand and clay soils with iron deposits. Around 80 percent of the vineyard is planted with Merlot, with Cabernet Franc taking up roughly 10 percent and approximately four percent planted to Petit Verdot. These figures are broadly reproduced in the flagship wine (the so-called “grand vin”) of the estate. The grand vin is typically aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, of which rougly 40 percent are new. This follows fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Around 7500 cases of Yon-Figeac are produced each year. The second wine, Les Roches de Yon Figeac, is made from one particular vineyard parcel, while the third wine, Yon Saint-Martin, is sourced from younger vines. Since 2005, Château Yon-Figeac has been part of the Vignobles Alain Château group, along with Loire Valley châteaux Belle Rive, de Varennes and de la Guimonière.
