Producer Information
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is a wine producer based in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin boasting a number of vineyard holdings across Burgundy’s wider Côte de Nuits subregion. The estate primarily produces red wines from Burgundian flagship grape variety Pinot Noir. A range of quality levels (from grand cru to “village” are represented. The domaine has its origins in vineyard plots in Gevrey acquired back in 1850 by viticulturist Jean-Baptiste Laroze. The domaine remained in the Laroze family for subsequent generations and expanded with the marriage of Suzanne Laroze (Jean-Baptiste’s granddaughter) to Alexandre Drouhin in 1919. On their marriage, Drouhin added his family holdings in Chambolle-Musigny to those of Laroze’s and the estate changed name to Domaine Drouhin-Laroze. Today the family owns 11.5 hectares (28.5 acres) of vines spread throughout Burgundy and is run by the fifth and sixth generation of the family. The domaine owns vineyards in six grand cru appellations in the Côte de Nuits: Musigny, Chambertin Clos de Béze, Clos de Vougeot, Bonnes-Mares, Latricières-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin. It also has plots in four premier cru regions and three village appellations. The grapes are all hand-harvested and transported to the winery in Gevrey-Chambertin. Grand cru wines are aged in 100 percent new oak, premier cru wines in 50 percent new oak, and village wines in used barrels. All of the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. In 2008, the family created Maison Laroze de Drouhin, a négociant business, in order to extend the range of wines. The maison purchases grapes from a range of growers, and makes the wines at the winery in Gevrey-Chambertin. Laroze de Drouhin has access to grapes from grand cru vineyards including Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin, as well as village plots in Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The family also produces a generic Bourgogne Chardonnay and Bourgogne Pinot Noir. As with the domaine wines, grand cru wines are aged exclusively in new French oak barrels and the production is extremely small – there are usually only two barrels each of Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin produced each vintage.
