Producer Information
To the average consumer, French wine is the pinnacle of quality – and the pinnacle of intimidation. From the outside, France can seem like a wealth of villages and vineyards, crus and châteaux, varieties and vintages that require knowledge only held by the most serious of wine drinkers. International wine company Treasury Wine Estates aims to change the perception of French wine as a stuffy, pretentious category with the launch of Maison de Grand Esprit, coming to the U.S. this summer. The company’s first French wine brand, Maison de Grand Esprit will break down the barriers surrounding luxury French wine by offering three tiers of cuvées from the country’s most iconic regions. It is not uncommon for a wine brand to span multiple areas within a larger region, like Bouchard Père et Fils does in Burgundy, for instance. But Maison de Grand Esprit takes this concept one step further, with a mission to produce luxury wines in all of France’s most iconic regions, including Burgundy, Bordeaux, the Rhône Valley, and Provence. The brand first launched last year in Asia and officially launches in the U.S. this summer with consumer events in Chicago, Atlanta, and New York. Until now, Treasury Wine Estates has focused almost exclusively on New World wine projects in Australia, New Zealand, and California. (The company does have one project in Tuscany.) Thus, it hopes to bring a New World mentality of structure and sourcing to French wine with Maison de Grand Esprit, without losing an Old World style of winemaking. Rather than the predominantly older, male consumer base that Treasury Wine Estates outlines as the typical French wine consumer, the brand targets young yet educated consumers seeking out luxury wine.
