Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: A sleeper of the vintage, Ausone’s proprietor, Alain Vauthier, produces this beautiful St.-Emilion. It possesses a sumptuous bouquet of crushed rocks, incense, raspberries, boysenberries, and a touch of cherries. Some earthiness intrudes on the palate, but it adds complexity and nuance rather than detracting from the wine’s beautiful fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with admirable elegance and purity as well as ripe tannin, this beauty can be enjoyed over the next 15+ years.
  • Wine Spectator: Has subtle violet and blackberry aromas, with a hint of ripe plum. Full- to medium-bodied, with pretty tannins and a fruity, subtle finish. There’s lots of Indian spices as well. Refined. Best after 2010.

Producer Information

Château de Fonbel is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru red wine made mainly from Merlot which accounts for 70 percent of the vineyard. It is owned by Alain Vauthier from Château Ausone. The wine also includes some Cabernet Sauvignon (20 percent of plantings) and Petit Verdot (7 percent), and also a small amount (3 percent of vines) of Carmenère. The latter has begun to gain a toehold in Bordeaux after largely disappearing in the 20th Century. The vineyard covers 16 hectares on gently sloping sandy-gravel soils on the Saint-Émilion plain. There are no facilities connected to the property. Wines are made at the nearby Château Moulin St. Georges.
