- Wine Advocate: A smaller selection and also all Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Impassible Mountain (28 months in 85% new French oak) offers more of everything and is a magical, blockbuster, yet ethereal styled Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma. With a kaleidoscopic array of crème de cassis, sagebrush, tobacco, cedar pencil, and awesome minerality, it has incredible concentration, full-bodied richness, and a skyscraper-like mouthfeel, yet it also stays weightless, elegant, and flawlessly balanced. There are few estates coming close to this level of quality in Sonoma with Cabernet Sauvignon, and if you want to taste pure perfection from Sonoma, try this wine!
Producer Information
Hidden Ridge Vineyard (also known as Immortal Estate) is a premium Sonoma County wine producer, known for its mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the estate’s high-elevation vineyard. The estate lies within one of Sonoma County’s newest AVAs, Fountaingrove District, which covers land between Mount Hood and Diamond Mountain in the western Mayacamas mountains. The 22 hectare (55 acre) vineyard is located on mountainous slopes altitudes ranging from 900-1700ft (270 to 520m) above sea level. The soils are composed of volcanic basalt and sandy loam, and the vineyard is planted almost entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon with single blocks of Petit Verdot and Chardonnay. Hidden Ridge was purchased in 1991 by Casidy Ward and Lynn Hofacket, who planned to build a country estate on the land. However, the remote location and rugged surrounds meant that it was better suited to grape growing, and since 2001, Hidden Ridge Vineyard has been producing Cabernet Sauvignon.
