Distillery Information

(KLINE-leash) Established in 1819 by the Marquis of Stafford in 1819, Clynelish was one of the first purpose-built distilleries. In 1823, the distillery became legal under the Excise Act. Unfortunately due to the recession in 1931 the distillery closed and did not open again until the end of World War II. In the 1960s Clynelish was modernized and electricity replaced coal. The increased demand for Whisky led to the construction of a new distillery with greater capability for production, located over the road from the existing distillery. In 1968 Clynelish moved to the new plot and the original distillery was renamed “”Brora””. Clynelish has a great visitor centre which has recently undergone a major facelift to coincide with the reopening of its neighbour, Brora distillery.
